Here are two paintings from Jeff Wack I find interesting for their treatment of light -one that I would liken to the careful treatment of tonal values so prevalent among illustrators / painters in the early 19th century, and specifically used so effectively by Maxfield Parrish.

These paintings are part of a separate art project entitled Sensuous Muse that Jeff has been developing alongside his illustration work. Check it out; in addition to the Parrish-influenced paintings you will see a few inspired by Klimt, Tamara de Lempicka, etc. In several cases, the digital treatment of the images allow for a softer -and better- light and tonal graduation in the images than their oil painted inspiration.

This blog post provides more insights into Wack’s approach with this project.

During a short lunch break at a Mexican restaurant in Pismo Beach, the light turned out to be amazing and I took these snaps with my iPhone.

Bad News by Jean Tripier

” Bad news” (Ink and watercolor on paper, 11″ x 17″) was just selected by the Society of Illustrators for their Illustrators 52 Annual book and show in New York. Thanks to the judges and everyone at the SOI!

Here is the blog entry I posted originally when I drew this piece.

As good things always come in twos, I was also lucky enough to discover the web site of Jason Seiler -another Illustrator 52 selectee- while googling for my selection notification. Brilliant!
